At Sea
January 23rd, 2025
It is still stormy, but not as bad as yesterday.
However, the movement in the Observation Bar must be off putting to some, I had the Bar to myself this morning. No worries about piano practice and someone sitting where I want to sit next to the outlet.
In his noon announcement Captain Hamish said that the weather will improve, but we were traveling along an area known as the Wild Coast, and it was notorious for the number of shipwrecks that occurred here. I could see how that could happen.
There are quite a few other ships out there, and they also seem to be battling the waves. This one was pitching a lot, and at times the bow was completely under water. Hopefully no one was on deck at the front of the ship.
In the afternoon we went to the deck 5 pool, but were nearly blown away, and we noticed that the cushions had been removed, and the sun loungers had been put away. This did not bode well for sunbathing and swimming so we thought we would try the main pool on deck 8.
This was a good choice, there was much less wind, and although the sea was still very choppy
Things looked good at this pool, so we settled in for a lazy afternoon of swimming, reading, and napping. This is the way that sea days should be spent.
We missed the Seabourn Members’ cocktail party. It was a formal night and at the time of the party, 5:30, we were still getting dressed. Captain Hamish announced his retirement during the party. He has been at sea for 40 years, and at Seabourn for 28, so he felt it was time to take a break. He will be leaving us in Cape Town.
I will really miss him. I love his noon announcements, and the way he blows the whistle, although he could do it more often in my opinion. He is so approachable, and always has time for a chat. He is very visible around the ship and it is so nice to see him at many of the events that the entertainment staff arrange. I don’t know who our new captain will be, but I hope they will be as good as Captain Hamish.
We had a multi course set menu again as it was a formal night. The food was excellent, and I did enjoy the dessert. It had enough chocolate to keep me happy.
Then when we returned to our suite there were chocolates on the bed. Dark chocolates. Maybe we will get milk chocolates tomorrow night. Fingers crossed.
