DAY 56 – March 2nd

March 3, 2017

Well, we went to sleep on February 28th, and woke up on March 2nd, but it really didn’t feel any different to March 1st. Even my computer thinks it’s March 1st.

I bumped into Klaus, the executive chef, in the Commodore Club and he told me that in celebration of St David’s day, lunch today in the main dining room is all about leeks. He is so good at taking care of our whims. The Commodore also came by the Commodore Club to chat with passengers. It has been raining on and off all morning, so everyone seems to be taking shelter there.

We traveled 524 nautical miles yesterday, and are 450 miles from Tonga. We have sailed 20,395 miles since we left Southampton. The depth of water under our keel is 5,300 meters. I thought that was deep, but tomorrow we will be in the 2nd deepest waters in the world, in the Horizon Deep where the depth is 10,880. The depth of water is all very interesting, but the main thing is that it is deep enough.

We went to Peter and Pauline’s cabin for drinks before dinner to celebrate Peter’s birthday. We originally met them on QE2, and have been lucky enough to sail with them a couple of times since then. They had made some good purchases of wine when we were in Chile, and we were glad to help ensure that they didn’t need to take any of it home with them. Before the party Pauline and I had discussed how many people you can comfortably fit into a cabin, and we agreed on 15 as reaching the limit. Luckily that was the number of people she planned on inviting. We all had a good time, and it was fun meeting new people there.

I love going to cabin soirees. People don’t seem to have them as often as in the past. It was always great fun on QE2 because there were so many different cabin designs, so you got to check them out. QV lacks that variety, but there are still several different designs. I like sneaking around the ship on turnaround days to check out the unusual and unique cabins before their new occupants move in.

The partying didn’t stop with Peter’s birthday. The World Cruise party for this segment was held tonight in the Winter Garden. I had initially felt disappointed that it wasn’t in the Queens Room, but as it turned out the Winter Garden was a great venue. They had hung up the different flags of all the countries we were visiting and had low lighting. The room actually looked very nice. There was music playing (a bit loud), great snacks, and you could sit outside by the pool to get away from the crowds. We had an excellent time. Roscoe was there looking very tropical and suave in his white jacket.

Our tablemates had gone to the Lido for dinner, so we dined alone in the main dining room in solitary splendor. We are clearly not so conversational when it is just the 2 of us – we were finished with dinner by 9:30 instead of the usual 10:30!

When we returned to our cabin, there were the World Cruise gifts for this segment – the same tote bag and baseball cap that we had received on the second segment, together with more World Cruise pins. It seemed unusual that they would give out the same gifts twice, and I wondered if this had been an error. The bag and cap are actually very nice, but just say “World Cruise 2017” on them, and do not mention the ship. This is probably to save money, but I personally am extremely put out by it. I want my bag to say “Queen Victoria World Cruise 2017”.  I mean we could have been on any ship or rinky dink boat, not the magnificent Queen Victoria, although I must admit the Cunard crest is a bit of a give away that it is probably from one of only 3 ships. Still, I am not happy.
