Up the Amazon
We awoke to scenery that was essentially unchanged since yesterday. Miles and miles of river and forest. The river is wider at the moment, so we are not as close to the shore, and we have not seen any more fishing boats.
The captain announced that we would be passing a town on the starboard side at 2:00 PM so we vacated our port side balcony, and headed out on deck to see the town. Well, it turned the town was on the port side after all, and we would have had a great view from our balcony. As this is new territory for him, I expect that the captain had been told the location of the town by one of the pilots. This has made me concerned. If the pilot gives an instruction to take a port heading, where he in fact meant starboard, that could mean disaster even in a river this size. Even if we didn’t hit the edge we would hit a sand bank for sure, putting a crimp on our journey around the bottom of South America.
We picked up 2 more pilots, and our original pilots disembarked. These pilots will take us all the way to Manaus.
We decided to use our Diamond voucher and go for dinner at Coriander. The couple from Manchester joined us too. It was a wonderful evening – good Indian food, attentive service, stimulating conversation, and sailing up the Amazon. Quite the treat.
We decided to skip the show as we have an early morning tomorrow, and returned to the cabin after dinner to get our backpack ready for the next day.
